This is a friend of mine who celebrates birthday at the end of the week, and because I am so horrible unimaginative when it comes to birthday presents, I thought I do a colourful portrait of her, and print it on glossy paper. ... Personally, I feel like the shadows on her face should be deeper, and I will put more detail in the tips of the hair (which don't really exist yet). Also thought about adding more, smaller light-dot-star-things at the top. I don't know. Having a family telling you your painting looks ugly, when you worked on it straight for three hours, is devastating. ._.
My mother said it looks ugly and the face like a boy's. My brother laughed and yelled: "What the HELL?! " So I decided to upload it here before it is finished and steal some good advices from you artists. Please keep that in mind, when you have something to critique, otherwise I might hide in a hole and cry until the cows come home.
That does seem like a sweet gift. It shows effort. Some highlights in the hair might be nice. Maybe ease some of the shading, it might make the nose a little less pronounced. The eyes and mouth are perfect and I really like the colourful background.
You are right about the highlights, I was a bit afraid of them, because I put a lot of colours in some strains of hair. Often such things turn out quite grey-ish. However, I have never done such a portrait before, but I want to do others and with the time I think I will get better (and make more highlights).

Thanks.
